Description

The Janitor's House at Hutchesons' Grammar School, located at 44 Kingarth Street in Glasgow, was designed by Thomson and Sandilands between 1910 and 1912 as part of a girls' school. It is a large, three-storey building with a palace-fronted design featuring Renaissance ornamentation, constructed from red ashlar stone. The main facade faces Kingarth Street and includes a pair of tall square baroque pavilions that contain entrances and belfries. These pavilions are connected by a central low projection at the ground level, which also has an entrance. The first floor features tall round-arched hall windows flanked by paired Ionic columns and a balustrade, with a nearly fully-glazed storey above that houses art rooms. The remaining windows are single and key-blocked at the first floor.

The south elevation facing Calder Street mirrors the details of the front but is simplified, featuring a pedimented centerpiece and shallow flanking pavilions raised above the wall-head. Most of the glazing is original, and the building is topped with a mutule cornice and a slate roof. The janitor's lodge is a two-storey L-plan structure with a shallow-domed turret, likely part of the original design. Additionally, there is a gymnasium block on Calder Street, characterized by ashlar piers and low walls with iron railings.
