Description

199-215 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow is a commercial building dating from around 1860, reconstructed by James M Munro in 1901. It is a four-storey, nine-bay asymmetrical structure with a modern ground floor, constructed of painted ashlar.

The building features windows set within architraves and chamfered reveals, with some keyblocked. The elevation is divided into three blocks. The eastern block has shallow projecting bipartite windows in the outer bays, although the mullions have been removed on the second floor. There are two single windows in the central bay on the first and second floors, and a large semi-circular window on the third floor, which is topped with a scrolled pediment and a shaped gable that breaks through the balustrade. The corner bay rises one storey higher and includes a semi-circular window, a cornice, and a pyramidal roof.

The central block consists of four bays, which reverse the detailing of the eastern block and features a stepped gable over the two central bays. The western block has two bays with similar details. The building returns to West Campbell Street with unequal bays that have shaped gables, and there is a gable end facing Sauchiehall Lane.
