Description

The building at 1-6 Keppochhill Road in Glasgow is a fire station located at the corner of Springburn Road and Keppochhill Road. It consists of two blocks arranged in an L-shape, with a practice tower at the rear.

The corner block, known as Block B, was designed by A B McDonald from the Office of Public Works and constructed between 1892 and 1893. It is built of ashlar and stands four storeys tall with four bays facing Springburn Road. The design features classical details, including a two-bay shallow advanced and pedimented centre with bipartite windows and the Glasgow crest in the tympanum. The ground floor, which is painted, contains four engine bays, one of which is part-glazed, and these are divided by pilasters. There is a low wing to the left, and the windows are sashes with four-pane plate glass glazing. The building has end stacks and slate roofs.

The block fronting Keppochhill Road, referred to as Block A, was designed by T Somers, the City Architect, after 1938. This block is made of red brick and features a piended (slated) roof, also standing four storeys tall with five bays arranged in a 2+2+2 configuration. It has wall-head stacks above blank strips of walling and additional end stacks. The practice tower, which is possibly contemporary with the original block, is tall, square, and constructed of yellow brick, with openings at the upper levels.
