Description

The Railway Tavern Public House, located at 1410-1416 Shettleston Road, is a mid-19th century building with a late 19th or early 20th century interior and later alterations. It is a single-storey, six-bay rectangular-plan public house featuring a single-storey section with a piended roof to the west and a later flat roof addition at the rear. The exterior is harled with painted margins and includes a base course. The entrances have 2-leaf timber doors, with the principal entrance featuring a vestibule off-centre to the right, flanked by glazed and timber doors. The jug bar entrance to the right also has 2-leaf glazed and timber doors. The principal elevation displays a large late 20th century fascia.

The windows have later glazing and grills. The building has a pitched roof covered with grey slates, straight skews, and harled wallhead stacks with a band course and cans.

Inside, as seen in 2011, there is a curved panelled timber island bar at the centre, with a painted timber and glazed partitioned area to the north of the bar. The original cash drawer is part of the island gantry bar, which includes lead coin containers, although the bar worktop is non-original. Adjacent to the partitioned area is a small jug bar or family room, and there are two snug rooms to the east, one of which contains an original bell mechanism that is no longer operational. The principal bar space includes an original settle, later tiled fireplaces, and a later mosaic tiled floor. There is a store room in the west section, and the toilets to the south, dating from around the 1950s, possibly replaced a third snug.
