Assembly Building, Glasgow School Of Art, 18-26 Scott Street, 168 Renfrew Street

The Assembly Building at the Glasgow School of Art, located at 18-26 Scott Street and 168 Renfrew Street, was designed by John Keppie and Henderson and constructed between 1927 and 1930. This rectangular-plan building features two and three storeys above a basement and is currently used as a student centre. The façade has six bays facing Renfrew Street and seven bays facing Scott Street, constructed from sandstone ashlar. Notable architectural details include prominent vertical mullions that divide the elevations into bays and decorative features at the eaves. The main entrance is located on the east side through a recessed bay, with two secondary entrances on the west elevation.

The windows on Renfrew Street are 12-pane timber sash and case and centre-pivot types, while the Scott Street elevation has large, predominantly fixed-pane metal windows. The building is topped with a slated piended roof and has truncated ashlar stacks, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the general layout has been preserved, featuring offices on the ground floor and an assembly hall with additional offices above. A section of the ground floor along Scott Street was converted in the late 1970s to create a bar, which includes part of the interior from a 1930s café that was originally located at 445 Victoria Road.
