Description
Renfrew 4-24 High Street is a three-storey building constructed in 1926 for the Renfrew Equitable Cooperative Society Ltd. It features a red sandstone ashlar exterior and is designed in an L shape with classical details. The original windows consist of six-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes, although some have been replaced with modern aluminium-framed windows that are not in keeping with the original design. The building has a slate roof.
On the north elevation, the structure is treated as two blocks, with the left block being nearly symmetrical. It has a canted section with four bays that include round-headed mullioned and transomed windows on the second floor, and bipartite windows on the first floor. These bays are flanked by giant order pilasters, with broken pediments rising through the main pediment. There are angle windows on the first and second floors, as well as a canted oriel with a round-headed pediment. To the left, there is a similar corner oriel with a pyramidal roof, and to the right, a single bay with wide doors and fanlights at ground level. The raised roof features an octagonal louvred ventilator on the right block, while the left block has a single window and a canted oriel, along with a double window and corner oriel.
The east elevation shares similar details with the north elevation but includes small barred windows at ground level. It has eight bays, with the first four bays featuring architraves around the first and second floor windows, along with aprons below and moulded cills. The second floor windows have keystones, with alternating segmental and triangular pediments below a cornice. Two bays are flanked by giant order pilasters, with a frieze above the ground floor supported by broad corbels. A segmental pediment spans both windows, topped by an open pediment. The single bay to the right mirrors the left bays and includes an oriel that turns the corner to the north elevation.
On the west elevation, there is a corner oriel to the left and a bipartite window to the right, treated similarly to the north elevation but with flanking panelled chimney stacks. The ground floor is obscured by an adjoining single-storey building.
