Description
Kelvinside Academy Annexe, located at 2 Mirrlees Drive in Glasgow, is a building designed by architect Thomas Smellie of Kilmarnock around 1902. This 6-bay house, which is now part of Kelvinside Academy, features a return elevation that shares similar architectural details with 11 Bellshaugh Road.
The building is two storeys high with a basement, constructed from rock-faced ashlar, with a polished basement and decorative margins and dressings. The windows have roll-moulded reveals, primarily consisting of single-light or bipartite designs, with a tripartite window only at the extreme left on the ground floor. There are two prominent two-storey canted bay windows with parapets that extend through the eaves, featuring plate glass lower sashes and small pane upper sashes. The entrance is accessed by steps that oversail the basement, leading to a doorway flanked by a single sidelight; both the doorway and sidelight have roll-moulded lugged architraves and a common cornice. A continuous band course runs along the first floor cills, and the building is topped with a mutule main cornice and slate roofs, complemented by wallhead and axial stacks.
The side of the building adjoins 11 Bellshaugh Road and includes a 5-light canted window. The rear elevation is constructed from stugged red ashlar and features a single-storey projecting service wing. Additionally, a low ashlar wall connects square ashlar gatepiers, and at the rear, a retaining wall supports cast-iron railings.
