Description
1 Mirrlees Drive in Glasgow is a terrace of two-storey houses designed by architect Thomas Smellie around 1902. The houses are constructed of polished ashlar, with No 5 having been stone cleaned. Each house features three bays, with a central doorway that has a depressed arch and is flanked by pilasters. Above the doorway is a curved cornice and a bold keystone, along with a glazed fanlight.
To the left of the central doorway, there is a corniced tripartite window with a pilastered architraved surround, while to the right, there is a two-storey canted window topped with a deep plain parapet that breaks through the eaves. The first-floor windows are architraved, with bi or tripartite ground floor windows, and all have moulded cills. The windows are mainly sash, with upper sashes featuring small pane glazing and lower sashes with plate glass. The eaves are adorned with timber modillions, and the houses have tall axial stacks and slate roofs with plain skews. The garden walls are rock-faced, with polished quoins and copings.
The flank of No 5 is made of coursed rock-faced ashlar, featuring a centrally placed oriel window on the first floor supported by timber brackets, with nine-pane glazing and coloured leaded glass. The flank of No 9 adjoins 1 Mirrlees Drive. The rear elevations are constructed of coursed rock-faced red ashlar, and each house has a projecting single-storey and attic hipped-roof service wing. No 5 includes a single-storey garage extension at the rear.
