Description
The Ca D'Oro Building, located at 122-136 Union Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Honeyman and completed in 1872. This four-storey warehouse showcases a Venetian Renaissance style and is situated on a corner site, featuring a later attic and modern shops at the ground floor. The building has five bays across the front and four bays along the side, with an additional two bays added to Union Street in 1988.
The ground floor is distinguished by polished ashlar with vermiculated bands on the piers, while the upper floors are constructed with cast iron. The building is adorned with leaded glass throughout. The entrance is located at No 122 Union Street, where the first-floor windows are arched and feature incised archivolts and decorative glazing bars. These windows spring from the ground floor piers, which are embellished with triglyph friezes, and the spandrels are richly sculpted.
Above, the second floor has an incised cill band and a giant order of slim colonnettes, with arches and circular lights above, broken into bays by pilasters topped with sculpted consoles and urns. A frieze runs between the second and third floors. The main entablature includes an incised projecting rosette frieze, and there is an arching projecting cornice that returns one bay to the east in Gordon Street, echoing the detailing of the main elevation.
