Description
St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery, located at 393 Ashgill Road in Glasgow, was designed by R Fairlie and Partners between 1954 and 1956, after Dr Fairlie's death, but still reflects his style. The church and the attached presbytery are built in a Spanish ranch style, featuring harled walls with an ashlar base course, dressings, and quoins only on the east front, brown painted window frames, and a green Westmoreland slate roof.
The church has a rectangular plan with various projections, including two uneven transepts and a lower gabled sanctuary at the west end, which is the liturgical east. There are several side chapel projections, one of which on the south side is canted. The bold gabled entrance front is flanked by tall bays that are gabled to the north and south. The entrance features three doors at the center, each with large carved panels depicting St Augustine, loaves and fishes, a chalice, and water, along with three long, multi-paned windows topped with cross finials.
Inside, the church is spanned by a parabolic arched roof and has plain fittings.
The presbytery is connected to the church by a low arcaded passage with round-headed arches. This asymmetrical, two-storey house features a variety of window designs, including one canted window on the south side, and has three bold stacks. The materials used for the presbytery are similar to those of the church, but it does not include ashlar.
