Description
288 Ashgill Road in Glasgow is an early post-World War II school designed by Ninian R Johnston of Boswell, Mitchell and Johnston architects in 1950, with a sculptural group by Paul Zunterstein added in 1953. The building is constructed of reinforced concrete and features a brick and glass exterior with a very shallow pitched synthetic roof. It is a long, two-storey rectangular teaching block that has two lower projections facing north. There are two entrance blocks, with a taller hall at the west end that includes a large window on the north side. At the rear and west, there are lower ranges of specialist teaching areas that step down the hill. A concrete sculpture of a mother and child is located on the north elevation.
Adjacent to the school is a single-storey, L-plan janitor's house situated to the northwest. This bungalow is constructed of brick and features metal casement windows, with no chimneys and a shallow pitched roof covered in bituminous felt. The entrance is located to the north in a projecting porch to the right of center, which has a catslide roof, and there is a small recess to the left. The south elevation includes a broad loggia with generous glazing.
