Description
Caledonia Road United Presbyterian Church, designed by Alexander Thomson in 1856, is located at 1 Caledonia Road in Glasgow. The building, which includes a church and hall, was situated on a gusset site and was burnt out in 1965. It features banded ashlar stonework set on a polygonal masonry base.
The south elevation showcases a temple front that rises above a ground floor podium made of banded masonry. This façade includes two boldly detailed corniced doorpieces adorned with Greek motifs and antifixae, along with original wooden doors. Above, there is an Ionic pedimented hexastyle portico.
On the east elevation, the banded masonry is complemented by three blank corniced windows featuring discs, with a low door positioned at the north end. Only one bay of the gallery level remains intact.
The west elevation consists of a one-storey hall that has nine pilastered windows, which are now blank, and two doors framed by architraves and a frieze, beneath small paired windows. The doors here are concrete replicas of the original wooden doors. The tall square tower is made of banded masonry and includes three narrow openings near the top, topped with a lantern and cross. A small section of cast iron railings is present at the base, while the rear wall has been modernized. The interior of the building has been gutted.
