Description

The Citizen's Theatre, located at 119 Gorbals Street in Glasgow, was originally designed by Campbell Douglas in 1878 and later altered by A Skirving in 1887, with decoration by Joseph Sharp. The proscenium was decorated by T Lawrie in 1895. The exterior, designed by James Sellars, was destroyed in 1977, leaving behind rubble walls. In 1989, the Building Design Partnership added a new façade and foyer, along with further later additions. The auditorium is an important survival, featuring early stage machinery and an operational paint frame.

The principal elevation on Gorbals Street is a two-storey structure made of yellow and banded grey brick, which is part of a larger office development that wraps around the south elevation. It features central glazed entrance doors set in a gabled bay that breaks the eaves, flanked by porthole windows. The central three bays have a glazed canopy, and the first floor is largely glazed. The building has overhanging eaves and slate roofs, with a wide rubble gable of the auditorium visible behind.

Inside, the 1989 foyer has a pitched glazed roof and contains six statues by John Mossman, along with further statuary from the now-demolished adjacent Palace Theatre located in the foyer and bar. The auditorium features two horseshoe balconies with fine plasterwork supported by cast iron columns with decorative capitals. There are two elaborately decorated boxes on either side of the raked stage, which has a simple pilastered proscenium. The understage area contains significant early timber stage machinery, and the backstage area includes a brick section with a rare operational paint frame and early machinery.
