Description
Laurieston House, located at 50-53 Carlton Place in Glasgow, is a classical terrace building designed by Peter Nicholson between 1802 and 1804. It is a three-storey and basement structure with 35 bays and features a pedimented ashlar front, which is channelled on the ground floor. The building has a curved Doric portico with a balustrade and fanlight doors in the prominent six-bay center, which is divided by seven pilasters that rise through the second and third floors. A Doric entablature runs along the top.
To the left of the main block, there are four original half-pilastered doorpieces. The first-floor windows are two-pane designs that break through a string course and are adorned with cast iron balconies. The block to the right was originally identical but underwent changes in 1902 when architect R Duncan added a new double pilastered doorway to Nos 55-61, blocking two old doorways and introducing a mansard roof with cast iron brattishing.
At No 40, there is a pavilion with five bays and an Ionic aedicule door, which is the only original pavilion remaining. The building has a seven-bay front facing Nicholson Street, with a lower three-bay continuation.
Inside Nos 50-53, Laurieston House features exceptional plasterwork, including columns, pilasters, swags, and cherubs in the vestibule and stairwell. The rear is constructed of rubble and includes projecting curved stair turrets. The front is complemented by cast iron railings and bootscrapers, and the building has a slate roof with ridge stacks.
