Description
72 Glencairn Drive in Glasgow is an impressive building designed by H E Clifford between 1888 and 1890, with later additions and alterations by Thomas Somers in 1935. This elaborate Scots Renaissance structure includes a burgh hall, park gate, and lodge, all constructed from rock-faced red ashlar and featuring intricate sculptural details. The roofs are a mix of slate and red tiles.
The hall is set within a wooded garden and is open to the road. It features a dummy tower house on the right (north) and a low projecting range at the front, which has an entrance on the right within a gabled open porch that includes a sculptured tympanum. To the left, there is an oriel window inspired by the Earl's Palace in Kirkwall, and a gabled section of the hall is located at the extreme left, with a long side facing the driveway. The windows have blocked arches, and there is an axial ventilator, with some leaded glass present.
Opposite the park driveway is the lodge, which is L-shaped and two stories tall, featuring shallow gables and roll-moulding. It has a curved roof over a low projection facing the park. The square gatepiers are adorned with pulvinated bands and topped with pyramidal finials, accompanied by screen walls.
