Description
St Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, located on Rotten Row, was designed by Speirs and Company in 1905 and relocated in 1923. This single-storey church has a rectangular plan and is constructed from corrugated iron with a timber frame and a pitched roof. It features pointed-arch windows and has a gabled vestibule that projects to the south, which includes a window facing south and a timber boarded door to the west. There is a lean-to WC addition on the east side and an octagonal window above the vestibule, topped with a timber cross at the gable apex. A lean-to vestry is attached to the northeast corner, and there is a triangular window on the north gable of the sanctuary, which contains amber-coloured glass. The corrugated iron and timber gables are painted green, while the window frames are painted white.
Inside, the church has a well-preserved interior lined with boarded pine. The kingpost roof structure features a beam above the sanctuary with the inscription: 'In this place will I give peace'. Many elements survived the fire of 1953, including a carved oak altar with an amber-coloured glass window above it, a timber canopy added in 1938, a pulpit on a raised platform to the east, a decorative stone font to the south, timber congregational chairs, a carved War Memorial, and a 1934 monument to the church's principal founders by Hew Lorimer. The church also contains good furnishings and timber panelled doors.
