Description
St Columba's Episcopal Church, located on Perth Road in Stanley, was designed by Speirs & Company of Glasgow and completed in 1898. This small, rectangular, aisless timber church features a four-bay nave and a steeply-pitched roof, built in the English half-timbered style. The exterior is made of boarded timber and includes cusped, timber-mullioned windows.
The south elevation has a gabled porch on the outer left, which contains a two-leaf, trefoil-headed timber door adorned with decorative ironwork. It also features narrow flanking lights and a tripartite window on each return. The two central bays have four-light windows, while the outer right bay has a bipartite window.
The east elevation presents a broad gabled façade with a stepped five-light window and a timber cross-finial at the top.
On the north elevation, the outer left bay has a gabled projection with a tripartite window and a timber door on the right return. The two central bays have four-light windows, and the outer right bay has a bipartite window that abuts a small lean-to timber projection.
The west elevation features a part-blocked three-light window on the gabled elevation, which is adjacent to a rectangular-plan rubble church hall.
The church has a multi-pane leaded glazing pattern, with some colored and margined glass. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a coped ashlar stack, overhanging eaves, and plain bargeboarding.
Inside, the church retains its original features, including an open-timbered roof, boarded dadoes, and a raised chancel with altar rails. Notable interior elements include a fine canopied rector's chair, an altar with a Dossal reredos, and an octagonal stone font.
