Description

This is a Roman Catholic church built in 1901, designed in the Arts and Crafts style. It is rectangular in shape and has seven bays. The exterior is timber-framed with half-timbering and horizontal boarding, featuring a corniced cill course, overhanging eaves, plain bargeboards, and a red clay roof with ridge tiles. Pivot ventilators are incorporated into the roof. Prominent gabled porches are located on the south side, alongside timber-clad buttresses. Swept-roof box dormers are above the clerestory, and a timber belcote sits on the west side.

The south (principal) elevation has seven bays arranged as 1-5-1. Large, square, tripartite windows with timber leaded panes are found in the central five bays, flanked by timber-clad splayed buttresses. A five-bay box dormer is centred above. Catslide ventilators are at the ridge. Gabled entrance porches are at the outer bays; the left porch has a double-leaf timber door with a 24-pane fanlight, while the larger porch on the right leads to a vestry with a timber door and a 15-pane fanlight, flanked by small windows.

The east elevation features a central gable with low-pitched side aisles and a porch on the left. A flat-roofed, rendered boiler hut with a chimney is located at the re-entrant angle on the right. The north elevation mirrors the south, with tripartite windows in each bay and buttresses flanking the central and penultimate bays. The west elevation has a central gable and a tripartite transomed leaded window with a later 20th-century stained glass panel. An overhanging timber dentil cornice sits below the gable apex, and buttresses flank the central bay. A small weatherboarded timber belcote features an exposed bell within a recess, a decorative ridge tile, and a terracotta cross.

The ground floor windows have coloured square-paned glass, while the dormer windows have diamond panes with pivot vents. The roof is covered in plain red tiles with terracotta ridges.

Inside, the church has an open queenpost timber roof structure supported by six square-plan, stop-chamfered timber columns with square dentilled capitals. The interior is fully timber-boarded. Pews dating from around 1950 are located at the west end of the nave. A central panel of stained glass in the west window, dated 1960 and created by Felix McCulloch, is present. A 17th-century German polychromed statue of the Madonna and Child is situated to the left of the west window. The original carved oak altarpiece and war memorial were relocated near the main entrance following earlier remodelling. Arts and Crafts wrought iron light fittings are in the nave, accompanied by corresponding wall lights in the aisles.

Boundary walls, tall and constructed of random rubble stone, run around the site, capped with half-round copes. A retaining wall is located on the north side.
