Description

This is a two-storey, square-plan Gothic villa built in 1875 by Frederick Pilkington. It is situated within Ravelston Park, Edinburgh. The villa is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone ashlar, with polished sandstone dressings; the canted bays and gables also use polished sandstone. Notable features include a base course, cornices to the canted bays, a cavetto eaves course, skews, and decorative skew-putts. Quoins are present, along with long and short stop-chamfered surrounds to windows. The mullions have elaborate stiff-leaf capitals. The corniced parapets incorporate cusped trefoil blind arcading to the advanced bays. Carved sun-motif rosettes are recessed into the gableheads.

The east elevation, which is the main entrance front, has three bays. A projecting, gabled bay is located on the left-hand side, featuring a projecting two-storey, three-light canted bay with segmental-arched windows at ground level and triangular-headed windows above. An elaborate wrought-iron finial tops the gable. An advanced entrance bay is positioned on the ground floor to the left of a two-bay recessed section on the right. This entrance bay has a segmental-arched opening flanked by nook-shafts and ornamental mouldings, framing a panelled timber entrance door and fanlight. A bipartite window is located on the ground floor to the outer right, with a single window above. The upper windows have gabled and finialled pediments that break the eaves.

The south-facing side elevation has two bays; a segmental-arched tripartite window is present in a slightly advanced rectangular bay, while a segmental-arched bipartite window sits in the bay to the left at ground level. There are bipartite windows with triangular-headed lights to the first floor in each bay, again topped by gabled and finialled pediments.

The west (rear) elevation is similarly three bays, with an advanced gabled bay centrally positioned. This bay features two small segmental-arched lights at ground level and a large, centred Tudor arch above. A planked door is located on the south return at ground level. A plain gabled bay sits to the right, with a gablehead stack. The bay to the left features a Tudor-arched window at both ground and first floor levels.

The north-facing side elevation has a double-gabled single-storey addition at ground level and a triangular-headed window offset to the right at first floor. Gablehead stacks are present on the double gable. A centred segmental-arched window with a gabled pediment breaking the eaves extends from the east return. A quatrefoil rosette is featured on the gable, inscribed "AQ."

The windows are timber sash and case with two panes. The roof is grey slate, and the corniced, lozenge-plan gablehead and ridge stacks have squat cans. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are visible. Coped, squared and snecked rubble boundary walls mark the street boundary.
