Description
Old Calabar is a picturesque, two-story villa dating from approximately 1865, designed by James Campbell Walker. The building is constructed from whin rubble with stugged and broached ashlar dressings and banding. Its roughly L-shaped plan is double pile, with a prominent two-story canted angle at the east side, featuring a deeply projecting gable above a round-arched window. A carved timber porch is situated in the re-entrant angle and features a decorative timber dormer above it. The projecting gabled bay on the ground floor has a canted window and bracketted eaves. The roof is slate. An old pump and well are located within the grounds. The design is comparable to James Campbell Walker's Trinity Villa in Edinburgh.
