Description
The archway at Rossend Castle in Burntisland dates from the mid-19th century but features elements dated 1382. It serves as a carriage archway flanked by turrets and an adjacent pedestrian archway. The structure is built from rubble with stugged ashlar quoins and dressings, and includes a base course, raked course, corbelling, and a crenellated parapet.
On the east elevation, the pointed carriage arch has a segmental bracing inner arch, with flanking piers topped by corbelled circular bartizans that are connected by a crenellated parapet. The spandrels feature small panels; the left panel displays a crown, entwined initials, and the date 1565, while the right panel shows a crown over a shield bearing a cross, dated 1119. The bartizans include cross gunloops, and the center of the crenellated parapet features a crown over a lion on a shield with the date '1582'. To the right, there is a lower rounded pedestrian archway inscribed 'Rossend' and dated '1382', with a blind tablet above it, topped by semicircular coping and adjacent to a coped rubble boundary wall on the outer right.
The west elevation features a chamfered corner on the outer right and a pedestrian archway to the left.
