Rossend Castle Lodge, 5 Melville Gardens, Burntisland

Dated 1816. 2-storey, T-plan Tudor gate lodge and service quarters converted to flats. Coursed rubble with droved quoins; base course and corbel table with crenellated parapet and eaves cornice; hoodmoulds with angled-stops, 4-centre, round-headed and segmental-arched openings, bracketed and architraved surrounds, voussoirs and stone mullions.

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical. 2-bay slightly advanced taller centre with oval date plaque with initials 'ESB' at centre, flanking hoodmoulded cart arches blocked with paired 4-centre arched windows, 1st floor with segmental-headed opening to right and to left of centre below crenellated parapet. Lower wing to right with round-headed timber door at centre flanked by small round-headed windows all under stepped hoodmould, segmental-arched windows in bays to right and to left; 1st floor with small segmental-headed window at centre and segmental-headed windows in flanking bays breaking roofline of crenellated parapet; lower pavilion to outer right with round-headed timber door at centre. Wing and pavilion to left of centre mirror of right.

W ELEVATION: projecting arm at centre with blind outer elevation, 3 windows and 2-leaf timber door with plate glass fanlight at ground on return to right with 3 windows and timber door with plate glass fanlight and forestair at 1st floor, 3 irregular windows at ground on return to left and 4 windows at 1st floor. Recess to right of centre with window to left at ground, small window at centre and further window to right, modern forestair to 1st floor door at left and bipartite window with dormerhead breaking eaves to right; single storey pavilion to outer right with blind lean-to extension across full width. Recess to left of centre with modern forestair to right leading to timber door, 2 irregular windows at ground to left and small window at centre above, single storey pavilion to outer left with window.

S ELEVATION: window in single storey pavilion with blind wall above.

6- and 8-pane glazing pattern in upper sashes over 2-pane lower sashes in timber sash and case windows, and plate glass glazing in fixed windows. Graded grey slates. Low coped ashlar stacks with cans, ashlar coped skews and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.
