Description

The fire station on Dunnikier Road in Kirkcaldy, designed by George Duffus in 1938, is a three-storey building in the Thirties Modern style, featuring a tall square practice tower at the northeast. It has a ferro-concrete frame, mostly harled, with ashlar and brick at the ground level on the west side. The design emphasizes horizontal lines, highlighted by a deep ashlar base course, a cornice at the ground floor, a band course above the second floor, and a deep parapet.

The principal (west) elevation is symmetrical, with shallow advanced outer two-bay pavilions that contain tripartite windows at the ground level and two windows on each floor above. This is flanked by three wide vehicle openings, with the outer two featuring iron cresting, while the center opening has a moulded, keystoned ashlar surround and flanking lamps, with modern doors. Each floor above has four symmetrical bays.

The east elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a low flat-roofed extension projecting from the square tower on the outer left and the taller practice tower on the outer right. It has a variety of openings with two decks above the ground level.

The north elevation displays asymmetrical fenestration, with a door at the center on the ground floor and the tower on the outer left. The south elevation also has asymmetrical fenestration.

The building has metal-framed casement windows with the original glazing pattern. Asymmetrically-shouldered, corniced wallhead stacks and a concealed roof complete the exterior.

Inside, the interior has been modernized, but the original floor and glazed tile dado have been retained in the engine room.

The boundary wall is a rubble-built retaining wall topped with ashlar coping on the west side.
