Description

461 and 463 High Street in Kirkcaldy are a pair of properties from the earlier and later 19th century that have been merged at ground level. The building is an irregular three-storey tenement with a public house on the ground floor.

No 461, from the later 19th century, features a three-bay design. The facade is made of ashlar, painted at the ground level, and random rubble with droved margins. It includes base and dividing courses, a ground floor cornice, and an eaves course. There are pilasters with block capitals on the ground and first floors, and a curved bay to the left of center. The first floor has round-headed openings.

On the south elevation facing High Street, there is a pilastered doorway with a timber door and a plate glass fanlight at the center, flanked by display windows with pilasters on the outer right and left. The first floor has regular fenestration with pilasters similar to the ground floor, a panelled dividing course above, and three additional windows on the second floor.

The west elevation facing Malcolm's Wynd has six bays above ground. It features a blocked door in the penultimate bay to the left and a blocked window to the outer right at ground level, with regular fenestration on each floor above and two tall wallhead stacks.

No 463, from the earlier 19th century, is a three-storey building with an attic and also has a three-bay design. It is harled with stone margins and has base and eaves lintel courses.

On the south elevation facing High Street, the ground floor has a two-leaf door with a plate glass fanlight at the center, with windows in the flanking bays (the lower panes are blocked) and a modern fascia above. The first and second floors each have three regular bays, with piended and slated dormer windows over the outer bays.

No 461 features a four-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, with fixed glazing at the ground level. No 463 has a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows, with small-pane glazing at the ground level. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are broad ashlar and brick stacks with cans.

The boundary walls are made of coped rubble.
