Description

The Dock and Harbour in Kirkcaldy primarily dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, incorporating earlier structures. The Inner Dock features an irregularly shaped basin with concrete repairs to the basin walls and signs of earlier rubble construction on the innermost quay wall. There are cast-iron pawls set into the quayside, which has various surfaces including tarmac, concrete, and granite sets, along with remnants of railway track on the eastern quayside.

The lock gates and swing bridge consist of timber and steel lock gates that connect the dock to the outer harbour, and there is a steel and timber swing bridge with remaining railway tracks. Decorative cast-iron lamp standards are also present.

The eastern pier has at least three phases of construction. The northern section is two-stage, featuring a walkway and parapet made of coursed rubble sandstone on natural bedrock, with steps leading up to the walkway. The middle section, built around 1845, is also two-stage with a walkway and parapet, made of droved ashlar sandstone with exposed lifting points and round-arched semicircular recesses. The southern section, constructed in 1909, includes a parapet and quay made of pre-cast concrete with cast-iron pawls.

The outer basin features a concrete shelf with a slipway to the west and two timber piers adjacent to the entrance of the inner dock. The western pier has a parapet and quay, cast-iron pawls, and a single-storey brick warehouse.
