The Ridge, 17 Low Causeway, Culross

The Neuk is a pair of adjacent two-storey buildings located at 18 Low Causeway in Culross, dating from the late 19th century. These buildings, now converted into flats, occupy a corner site and feature later additions from the 20th century. The southern elevation is constructed from coursed ashlar, while the northern elevation of No 17 is made of tooled stone, with pebble-dash used on other parts.

On the southern elevation, the left side has a two-storey appearance with a two-leaf door and flanking windows. To the right, there is a door and three first-floor windows. The gable wall on the right has two ground floor and two first-floor windows centered above. An ashlar band course runs above the ground floor openings, and remnants of the former shop name, 'The Corner Shop', can still be seen on the gable wall band course. The elevation features a plain eaves course and a plain base course, with a narrowly chamfered quoin at ground floor level on the right.

The eastern elevation includes a door on the left and three windows to the right, with four first-floor windows aligned above the ground floor openings. There is a chamfered quoin at ground floor level on the right.

The northern elevation has a door on the right side of the gable wall, leading to a two-storey flat-roofed extension that includes a ground floor window and a larger first-floor window. An advanced section to the right has a partly glazed second floor and a door on the left return, with external steps leading up to it. The rear of the Low Causeway elevation features a ground floor door with flanking windows and first-floor windows above, along with an overhanging second storey section to the right. There is an advanced first-floor porch to the far right, with a door facing north and external stone steps leading from the north.

The western elevation has ground and first floor glazing from a modern extension, and it is attached to Bandar Abbas on the eastern side.

The buildings predominantly feature four-pane timber sash and case windows on the Low Causeway side and eight-pane timber sash and case windows on the eastern side. There is one eight-pane timber sash and case window at the rear, with replacement glazing elsewhere. The doors have been replaced, and some include fanlights. The roofs are pitched on the southern side, with a skewputt on the southern gable and a piended roof to the northeast. The slate roofs include a corniced gable apex stack on the southern gable, a coped gable apex on the western gable, and polygonal chimney cans. There is also a chimney on the flat-roofed wing with a circular can.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2001.
