Description

Stephen Memorial Hall, located on Little Causeway in Culross, was built in 1883. This single-storey, three-bay hall has a rectangular plan and is constructed of tooled snecked ashlar. The building features droved, chamfered ashlar long and short quoins around the windows and doors, along with a decorative doorpiece topped with a gablet that is dated. The advanced base course has a sloping head, and there is a modern lean-to extension at the rear.

The south elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a central door framed by a moulded, chamfered, curved flat-arch doorpiece with a fanlight above. A chamfered pointed arch is positioned above the door, featuring the monogram 'W A S' and the inscription 'STEPHEN MEMORIAL HALL'. An advanced hoodmould with decorative label stops is present, along with a corniced gablet above the door, which contains a chamfered stone dated 'A.D. 1883'. The pediment is topped with a cross within a circle finial. Tall tripartite windows with chamfered stone mullions flank the door.

The west elevation has a central tripartite window that is taller than the others, with pointed ashlar arched stonework above it and a rectangular louvred opening above. To the left is the lean-to extension, and a timber boarded door is located to the right.

The north elevation features seven windows at the rear. The east elevation is attached to Little Sandhaven and has windows with eight panes each; the central top two panes tilt open. The rear has modern fenestration and a timber panelled two-leaf door. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, featuring crowstepped skews on the south-facing east gable shared with Little Sandhaven, along with an arch within the skewputt. The other skews are raised and flat, with swept skewputts to the west and a slightly swept roof to the south. A roll finial is present on the west gable, and there is a corniced gable apex stack on the east side, as well as a corniced brick wallhead stack at the rear, situated between the hall and the extension, featuring swept shoulders and a circular can.

The interior was not seen in 2001.
