Description

The Red Lion Inn, located on Low Causeway in Culross, has origins dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 18th century. This two-storey public house features a four-bay design, along with a single-storey, single-bay section to the east. The exterior is harled, with painted ashlar door and window surrounds and a base course.

The north elevation is nearly symmetrical, showcasing a central door with a pub sign above it, flanked by single ground floor windows. Above, there are three first floor windows centered above the ground floor windows, with an additional first floor window to the right. A pend from Beechwood House extends from the right side. The single bay section to the east is set back at an angle and includes a ground and first floor window, with the first floor windows positioned close to the eaves.

The east elevation is plain, featuring a pub sign and a chamfered left quoin. The south elevation is also plain, with a single bay to the east. It has first floor windows at both the far right and far left of the main pub building. An advanced wing is located at the center right, which includes a first floor window on the right return and a ground floor wall at the right angle. The south elevation of the wing has two ground floor windows and a centered first floor window, with a chamfered right quoin and a ground floor door in the chamfer. To the left of the wing, there is a flat-roofed, two-storey addition with a ground floor door, and a flat-roofed, single-storey addition at the far left featuring two glazed doors and a window to the left.

The west elevation is plain with an exposed stone gable, while the ground floor is obscured by a modern single-storey, flat-roofed extension. The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a roof light at the rear, and replacement timber and glazed doors. The roofs are pitched and slated, with crowstepped gables on the main pub building, a piended roof on the rear wing, and a triangular-shaped lean-to roof in the inner angle extension. There are coped gable apex stacks, a ridge stack on the main section, and both polygonal and circular chimney cans.

Inside, the pub features a modern interior. The boundary walls consist of sandstone rubble, enclosing the rear car park.
