Description
Largo House is a Classical house, likely dating to around 1750, although construction may have spanned several years, with later wings added in 1831. It is possibly the work of John Adam, and was originally built for the Durham family. The building is now roofless and exists as a ruined shell.
The main house has a symmetrical front with seven bays, the central three projecting forward and topped with a pediment. It is two storeys high, with a raised basement. The facade features diagonally droved ashlar stone with polished dressings and rusticated quoins; the flanks and rear are of harled rubble with ashlar dressings. A central doorway is framed by Ionic pilasters and has a segmental pediment displaying a date. Flanking the doorway are two windows with elaborate egg and dart detailing around the arches, and a coat-of-arms in the pediment. A band course runs above the basement on all elevations; east-facing windows feature lugged architraves, apron panels at ground level, and bracketed sills. The rear of the main block has seven windows, with a shallow, three-window central bow that is blind.
At the rear is a three-bay semi-circular projection. Some remnants of plasterwork survive internally, but the interior is otherwise destroyed.
A rock-faced garden pavilion, formerly within the grounds of Largo House, has been relocated to the garden of Balsusnie, on High Street in Upper Largo. John Adam also supplied a chimney piece for the house. References to the Durham papers provide further historical context regarding the property.
