Description

This is an 18th century, two-storey, three-bay mid-row tenement situated in North Queensferry. The building is rectangular in plan and rendered with painted margins and stone cills, with the ground level sloping to the west.

The south elevation (which serves as the entrance to both numbers 10 and 14 Main Street) features a central timber door flanked by single windows, with two first-floor windows centred above. The east elevation adjoins number 12 Main Street, and the west elevation adjoins number 16 Main Street. The north elevation features a central modern timber-panelled door approached by a railed forestair, with flanking single windows. A small window is set to the right of the forestair at ground floor level.

The windows are timber sash and case windows with horns, each containing four panes of glass. The building has a pitched roof covered in grey slates, with square-headed stone skews. Remnants of a crowstepped skew remain on the northeast corner, while beaked skewputts are visible on the north side. The roofline is punctuated by coped ridge stacks topped with clay cans.

The interior was not inspected in 2002.

The building retains an original upper and lower flat arrangement, with the upper dwelling (number 10 Main Street) accessed via the traditional forestair. It is part of a group of 18th century cottages formerly known as Davidson's Buildings, arranged along a lane now known as Charlie Black's Close. This lane was previously known as Sylvester's Close and formerly provided access to what was once the King's Way, the older road running along West Bay. The building is part of a group listing with numbers 12 and 16 Main Street (see separate listings for details).
