Description
Piteadie Castle includes an extensive 15th-century walled garden with a round-arched Renaissance gateway. The gateway features a pediment inscribed with the Calderwood arms and the date 1686. A second gate is located within the west wall, bearing an inscribed lintel. The castle itself has a history dating back to 1564, when it belonged to William Kirkcaldy of Grange. Ownership subsequently passed to David ‘Boiswell’ of Glassmount and then the Boswells of Balmuto. In 1671, the property was sold to William Calderwood, an Edinburgh burgess and apothecary, whose initials appear above the gate to the walled garden. Later accounts describe the castle as being in a "very entire" state of ruin, with recent habitation, and state that it belonged to the Earl of Rosslyn and had been in the St Clair family for a long time. The listing excludes the Scheduled Monument SM871.
