Description

The Panama is a long, narrow two-storey commercial and office building dated 1888, featuring classical details. It is designed to fit the awkward site of a railway line and road, widening in plan from north to south. The building has a painted ashlar finish with channeling at the ground level, a base course, a ground floor lintel course, and a cornice. Other notable features include a moulded canopy, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, along with raised window margins on the first floor.

On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there are panelled aprons beneath the ground floor windows. The centre has three windows, with the leftmost window having a lowered cill. A fanlit door is flanked by windows to the right, and there is another door in the penultimate left bay with a window (also with a lowered cill) in the outer left. The first floor has seven windows arranged in groups of two, two, and three, with a shouldered, scroll-flanked, corniced wallhead stack dated between the centre and right groups.

The north elevation is very narrow and blank at ground level, with a window located on the first floor. The south elevation features a partial height stair extension with a barred window to the right of centre on the first floor.

The building has plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates, featuring a piend and platform design. Coped and shouldered wallhead stacks with scroll decoration complete the architectural details.
