200-208 High Street, Burntisland

This is a substantial three-storey tenement built in the late 19th century, situated on a corner site on High Street, Burntisland. The site slopes to the south. The building has modern shopfronts at ground level, replacing earlier configurations. The facade is constructed of dressed ashlar, with rusticated quoins and pilaster strips; painted cement render is used at the ground floor entrances, while squared and snecked whinstone appears on the west elevation. A prominent feature is the lead-domed, engaged corner tower.

The north (High Street) elevation exhibits a mix of modern and original features. The right-hand side contains a modern Post Office with various display windows. To the left, a shop at number 198 has a traditional bipartite door with wrought-iron fanlight and a modern display window. An architraved tenement entrance is located in the penultimate bay to the left, with a panelled door and plate glass fanlight. The first floor is divided into six bays, with a window set in a slightly advanced gable to the outer left, topped with a segmental pediment. The windows have pediments, both segmental and triangular, supported by console brackets. Regular fenestration is present on the second floor.

The corner tower, facing northeast, features a bowed tripartite window on each floor, all with moulded cornices beneath a lead dome topped with a ball and spike finial.

The east elevation, following the sloping ground, is a three-bay gable with windows grouped 1-2-1. It maintains regular fenestration on each floor. The west elevation has a small ground floor window centrally located, with two stair windows above.

The original four-pane glazing pattern remains in sash and case windows on the south elevation in bays 2 and 3, while plate glass glazing is found in the second-floor windows of the east and northeast elevations. The remaining windows contain modern glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates. Ashlar stacks, some with cans, along with ashlar coped skews and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers, complete the building’s exterior details.
