Description
Balbeggie Cottage and its outbuildings date from the earlier to mid 19th century. This single-storey, L-plan gabled cottage features deeply overhanging eaves, creating a U-plan shape with L-plan outbuildings attached at the rear. The structure is built of snecked rubble with dressed ashlar quoins, chamfered arrises, and stone mullions.
On the south elevation, there is an advanced gable to the left of centre, which includes a canted quadripartite window, and a bipartite window in the bay to the right, although the centre bay is not visible from this viewpoint. The west elevation has a blank bay to the right of centre and a gabled bay with a bipartite window to the left. A boundary wall with gatepiers is located to the outer left.
The north elevation features a narrow window to the left and a slightly lower wing that projects to the outer left, which includes a part-glazed timber door and window. The east elevation has a gabled bay to the left with a lower wing to the right.
The cottage has a small-pane glazing pattern in the timber sash and case window on the north side, while out-of-character uPVC glazing is present elsewhere. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are paired polygonal stone stacks on a coped ashlar base. The deeply overhanging eaves are decorated with bracketed details.
The outbuilding and gatepiers consist of a small courtyard to the north with an L-plan outbuilding adjoining the house. The gatepiers are square in section, made of ashlar, and feature cushion capitals.
