Description

The War Memorial at Park Place in Thornton, dating from around 1920, features decorative cast iron gates alongside square ashlar gatepiers topped with ball finials. The outer wings include cast iron pedestrian gates. On the west elevation, bronze plaques on each pier commemorate the First World War, specifically the years 1914 to 1919 and the King's Own Scottish Borderers. The east elevation has bronze plaques on each pier that commemorate the Second World War, covering the years 1939 to 1945, which were presumably added around 1945.
