Description

Balcurvie House, located in Windygates, is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house featuring a piend roof and a single-storey service wing. The exterior is harled with stone margins, and it includes a base course, eaves cornice, and blocking course, along with stone mullions.

On the south elevation, there is a panelled timber door with a blocked fanlight at the centre, set within a corniced doorcase topped by a block pediment. Above this, there is a window on the first floor. To the right, there is a window in both floors, and to the left, a full-height, corniced canted window.

The west elevation has a window to the outer left on both floors and a prominent shouldered wallhead stack at the centre. The single-storey wing to the left features two windows and a small opening to the right.

On the north elevation, there is a stair window at the centre. The east elevation includes a small window at the ground level to the outer right, with first-floor windows to both the outer right and left, and another shouldered wallhead stack at the centre. The single-storey wing to the right has two windows.

The windows throughout the house are timber sash and case with 8 and 12 pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and the stacks are coped ashlar with harled shoulders, while the wings have harled stacks with thackstanes. The skews are ashlar coped with ropework detail and scroll skewputts.

To the east of the house, there is a walled garden enclosed by a flat, ashlar coped rubble boundary wall, with a pedestrian entrance to the west. The boundary walls feature semicircular coped rubble, flat coped ashlar quadrant walls, and cushion-capped droved outer piers for the pedestrian gates, along with square inner piers for the carriage entrance. These piers are made of ashlar with a base course, string course, and are coped with a moulded cornice. The gates are made of arrowhead cast iron.
