Description

Wilson's Institution, located at 85 New Row in Dunfermline, is a detached former free school built in 1857. This single-storey building features a rectangular plan and has a classical design, highlighted by its pedimented principal elevation facing east, which is flanked by Doric pilasters. The facade is made of sandstone ashlar, with coursed stugged snecked sandstone and ashlar dressings in other areas. It has a base course on the principal elevation and an eaves band along the north and south elevations, with architraved openings on the principal side and coped gables.

The east elevation includes steps leading up to a central entrance, which has a cornice and a four-panel timber door. On either side of the entrance are round-arched windows featuring keyblocks, pilastered jambs, and projecting cills. The Doric pilasters on either side support an entablature, and above the entrance, a panel inscribed with 'WILSON'S INSTITUTION 1857' is set within the pediment. The outer Doric pilasters are slightly set back at the arrises.

The south elevation has a two-light mullioned window with a projecting cill in each of its four bays, along with an inserted entrance on the outer left, which has a cemented architrave and a plain timber door. The west elevation features a two-light mullioned window with a projecting cill in the center, while the north elevation is blank.

The building has eight and four-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and a small ashlar stack at the ridge behind the pediment, along with a pair of corniced wallhead stacks with curved shoulders on the south side, although the cans are missing. The interior has not been inspected since 1998.
