Description
South Bridge Primary School, located at 6 Infirmary Street in Edinburgh, is a former school building designed by Robert Wilson in 1885. This two-storey, Gothic, L-plan structure currently serves as a resource centre as of 2007. The north elevation facing Infirmary Street features a triple-gabled design with a central apex bellcote. The building is constructed from droved, coursed sandstone with contrasting ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, moulded string course, and cornice. Some gables extend above the wallhead. The ground floor has shouldered openings, while the first storey features shallow, pointed-arch window openings and some square windows on the side and rear elevations. The east and west entrances have segmental-arched openings with two-leaf, six-panel timber doors, each marked with 'Boys' and 'Girls' carved above. A full-height addition was made to the south in 1892. The Infirmary Street elevation has a slightly advanced, buttressed central bay with three-light windows, and the first storey windows have Corinthian reveal colonnettes. A central moulded roundel with a carved figure is located above.
The building predominantly features timber sash and case windows, with configurations of six over twelve and six over six. The roof is covered with grey slates and has corbelled gable stacks, skews, and axial ventilators.
The interior, as seen in 2007, remains largely unaltered, featuring two staircases with metal balusters and cupolas above. There are decorative plasterwork cornices and timber dado panelling in the classrooms.
Adjacent to the school is a two-storey, L-plan former janitor's house at 8 Infirmary Street, which is now a private residence as of 2007. This building is made of coursed, stugged sandstone with contrasting polished ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, moulded string course, and cornice. It features a canted bay window on the ground floor and a four-panel timber entrance door in the re-entrant angle to the west, topped with a fanlight. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case, and the roof is also covered with grey slates, featuring coped wallhead stacks and cast iron rainwater goods.
The boundary walls and gatepiers surround the buildings. To the west and south, there are tall rubble walls with canted coping, topped with iron railings to the south. The east side features coped, stugged, coursed walls, while the north elevation has ashlar walls topped with metal railings and includes a pair of square-plan gatepiers with a base course and canted coping stone.
