Description

This is an earlier 19th century detached villa, with later additions, situated in Dunfermline. The house is two storeys and has an attic, comprising a rectangular main block with a single-storey wing to the west and further single-storey additions to the rear (north). The design is classical, with a prominent open porch to the main (south) elevation, featuring an entablature supported by Tuscan columns. The principal and east elevations of the main block are built of droved sandstone ashlar, painted cream, while the north and west elevations use coursed sandstone rubble. The west wing's principal elevation is also of droved sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the other sides and north additions are largely harled, with polished ashlar dressings. A base course is present on the principal elevation of the main block and the west wing, as is an eaves cornice to the main block and an eaves band to the principal elevation of the west wing. Ground-floor windows on the principal elevation of the main block have consoled cornices. Coped gables are present where they exist.

The south (principal) elevation features a central entrance to the main block, accessed by the open porch with its entablature supported by Tuscan columns and matching pilasters to either side of the doorway. A panelled timber door with a decoratively glazed rectangular fanlight is set within the porch. Flanking windows are present on both the ground and first floors, with a single window above. Later piended dormers have been added to the roof. The single-storey wing is set back slightly to the left, with a three-light mullioned window in the centre, and windows to the left and right.

The east elevation has three regularly spaced windows on the ground floor of the main block, with the same arrangement on the first floor, although the outer windows are now blocked. A boundary wall projects slightly forward to the right, with single-storey extensions behind.

The north elevation shows irregular fenestration to the main block, with a stair window to the right of centre and a ground-floor window to the right, flanked by outer windows on the first floor. Single-storey extensions project forward to the left and right.

The west elevation shows a single-storey wing projecting forward and a blank gable to the right.

Most windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows to the main block and west wing. The roofs are grey slate, predominantly piended, except for the main axis of the west wing. Pairs of ashlar wallhead stacks with band courses are positioned on either side (east and west) of the main block, with a second stack added to the west. A corniced ashlar gablehead stack rises from the west wing, alongside circular or octagonal stacks.

The interior was not inspected in 1998, but it appears to retain its original staircase with a cast-iron balustrade.
