Description

This is a mid to later 19th century cottage, originally built on a rectangular plan with three bays. It is likely that the cottage was converted from a single-story building. The ground floor is constructed from random whinstone rubble, while the upper portion is built with coursed stone, featuring dressed ashlar margins and quoin strips with chamfered edges.

The south-facing (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with a central door and windows in the flanking bays. Dormer windows with leaded glazing are set into the roof, breaking the eaves line, and a small rooflight sits centrally. The north elevation has three small windows in a catslide extension, and a single window in the main building. A panelled door with a fanlight sits to the left of centre on the west elevation, alongside a small window to the right. The east elevation has a single window bay on the ground floor to the left.

The windows are sash and case style, with 8 panes on the front and side elevations and 4 panes at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slates with bracketted overhanging eaves, and the chimneys are coped with ashlar on the east side and brick on the west side. Some chimney cans are present, alongside cast-iron guttering that extends across the dormer windows.

The cottages at 4 Leslie Mains, along with number 3 Leslie Mains and the Keeper's Cottage, were provided for estate workers by the Earl of Rothes. Nearby is the former site of Leslie House stables and garages, which were demolished in the early 1960s; it is reported that these garages included inspection pits lined with marble.
