Description
Keepers House is a circa 1950 Arts and Crafts style house, representing a reworking and possible extension of an earlier building on the site. It is an irregular, single and two-storey, three-bay gabled design. The main facade is constructed of bull-faced, squared, and snecked stone with polished ashlar margins and long and short work quoins, featuring stone mullions and chamfered arrises. The side and rear elevations are of random rubble.
The west (principal) elevation displays an asymmetrical two-storey bay to the left. A wooden, partially glazed door is situated to the left of centre, sheltered by a swept-roof porch supported by a Doric column with a rightward curve, resting on an ashlar corbel and wall of the outer bay. A gabled dormer window sits above a ground floor bipartite window to the right, while a similar bipartite window is located at the first floor within the gable. A small stone gabled dormer window is positioned over the door, adjacent to a full-height bay on the left.
The east elevation is single-storey, featuring an advanced right bay with lean-to roof and a door with slit window. The centre bay has two irregular windows and a roof light, while the outer left bay is blank with a modern dormer. The north elevation has a gablet to the left of the two-storey block, with windows on both levels. A lean-to bay extends to the outer left, containing a door to a coal store. The south elevation presents a single-storey gable end with a window bay to the outer right.
The windows are primarily sash and case style with a 10-pane glazing pattern; a contemporary dormer features 3-pane plate glass and a fanlight. The roof is covered in grey slates and incorporates coped ashlar stacks and overhanging eaves.
Inside, a good-quality Arts and Crafts dog-leg staircase features corner posts and a dado rail in the drawing room. The house was adapted and extended in the early 1950s to provide accommodation for the Head Forrester of the Leslie estate, according to information provided by a former resident.
