Description
Dukes Lodge, also known as Leslie House, is a castellated lodge built in 1906 with an attic extension. It was altered in 1936 and 1955 by James Gillespie and Scott. The lodge is a single story with an attic, arranged in a three-bay, T-plan, with a piend roof. It is constructed of droved ashlar, with modern blocks used in parts of the north and east elevations. The building features a stone plinth, moulded cornice, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises. A crenellated parapet tops the structure.
The west (main) elevation has a round-headed doorpiece with a hood-mould and block label-stops; a coat-of-arms is positioned above within the crenellated parapet. A boarded door is set deep within the doorpiece. Large bipartite windows are situated in the flanking bays, featuring narrow lights to the return faces. A diamond-aligned stack extends from the wall to the south. Crenellation is located at eaves height.
The south elevation displays a bipartite window centrally located within a projecting bay. There is a window to the west return and a window to the left, all under wallhead crenellation. A diamond-aligned stack is present to the west, and a door is on the right side. A modern slate-hung piended dormer window is on the right.
The east elevation features a window to the left of centre, a small window to the left, and a window to the right. A modern dormer, matching the style of the south elevation, is centrally placed on the roof pitch.
On the north elevation, a window is located to the right of centre, and a modern dormer (similar to the others) is on the left, with a modern rooflight at the centre.
Fixed plate glass glazing is used on the west elevation, while elsewhere, plate glass is set in sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, featuring a stone ridge. Ashlar coped crenellations and a stepped skew are at the base of the stack. Cavetto coped ashlar stacks include cans and decorative rainwater hoppers with ball finials.
Dukes Lodge is situated near the original Leslie House gatepiers, which date to 1671 and have ornate wrought-iron gates from 1906. It forms a group with Leslie House, West Lodge, West Gate, Duke's Lodge Gates, and Forester's Lodge. Further details can be found in the James Gillespie and Scott Archive at St Andrews University Library.
