Description

Craigtoun Park Island Bridge is a picturesque group of four buildings designed by Paul Waterhouse around 1920, located on a large man-made island within a boating lake at Craigtoun Park. The layout is roughly oval and includes a gatehouse, summerhouse, loggia, boathouse, and pavilion, all surrounded by boundary and retaining walls that create a central courtyard. The buildings are constructed of brick with a white harl render and painted dressings, featuring timber doors and roofs covered with red pantiles. Access to the island is via a narrow hump-back bridge made of hammer-dressed rubble with ashlar dressings, which has three arches and large cutwaters.

The gatehouse, situated to the north, is designed in a Franco-German style and consists of two stages with a segmental arched gate and a piended roof topped by a rotunda with a conical cap. Inside, there is a timber stair leading to the upper level.

To the northwest is an L-plan summerhouse that features a conical-capped circular tower. Extending to the right is a three-bay loggia supported by columns, while to the left is an outshot with tripartite windows, both topped with piended roofs. A curving timber stair leads to the upper floor within the summerhouse tower.

The boathouse to the south is influenced by Italian Baroque design, showcasing three circular windows on each side, an arched watergate with a massive console keyblock, and Doric columns at the corners, adorned with urn finials and shaped gables.

Finally, to the east is a square-plan Italianate pavilion, which features a pyramid roof and a picture window.
