Description
West Lodge at Balbirnie House, built in 1823 by R & R Dickson and extended in the 20th century, is a single-storey classical lodge house originally designed in an L shape. The building features dressed ashlar stone with polished ashlar and a harled extension. It has a base course, eaves cornice, and blocking course, along with architraved windows and stone mullions.
On the north elevation, there is a prominent flat-roofed open stone porch located in the re-entrant angle to the right. This porch includes a Doric column to the northwest and pilasters to the northeast and southwest, with a modern timber door set back. To the left, there is a canted window with a flat roof in a gabled bay.
The west elevation features a gabled bay to the right with a canted window, while to the left, there is a narrow window on the recessed face of the porch and a blank face of a modern flat-roofed extension on the outer right.
The east elevation has deeply moulded square windows on three scroll brackets, positioned to the right and left of the center in slightly advanced bays. A modern extension is attached at the outer left.
The south elevation consists of a modern extension with a timber door at the center and windows in the flanking bays.
The lodge has plate glass glazing in timber sash and case windows on the north and west sides, while timber casement windows are used elsewhere. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a shouldered and coped ashlar stack.
The property is enclosed by coped rubble boundary walls.
