Description

44-46 Newmarket Street in Falkirk is a classical tenement building dating from the later part of the 19th century. It stands three stories tall and features three bays, forming part of an irregular terrace. The ground floor has paired traditional shopfronts. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and includes decorative elements such as architraves, a cornice above the shops, a cill course at the first floor, and an eaves frieze and cornice.

On the principal south elevation, there is a deep-set, architraved door to the tenement, flats, or offices located on the outer left. Above this door, there are paterae and a frieze. The central and right sections feature paired tripartite timber shopfronts, each with polished granite base courses and in-canted entrances. These entrances have glazed doors with basket-arched surrounds and square etched fanlights above. The shopfronts are separated by panelled, carved, and fluted pilasters, and the angled fascias are framed with decoratively carved consoles that support the cornice above. Wrought-iron shop bracket signs are positioned above the shops, with the sign on the right indicating a former luggage store with an umbrella motif.

Originally, both upper floors had a single window in the center and stone mullioned bipartite windows in the outer bays, though the bipartites on the second floor now lack mullions. The shopfronts feature plate glass glazing, while the first floor has timber sash and case windows with four panes. However, the second floor has modern windows that are out of character with the rest of the building. The roof is covered with grey slate.
