Description

The Star Inn, located at 150-154 Grahams Road, is a mid-19th century two-storey, four-bay tenement situated on a corner site, featuring a public house on the ground floor. It is particularly noted for its 1930s Art Deco interior. The exterior is constructed of rendered rubble with ashlar dressings and includes an eaves course. The building has a sweeping angle at the corner, with timber doors on both the corner and east elevation, adorned with leaded and coloured glass panels that feature a star motif and diagonal, triple-bar door handles. A simple Art Deco fascia complements the design.

The façade includes a set of four fixed-pane border-glazed leaded windows that also display a star motif and lettering. On the first floor, there are two-pane timber sash and case windows with a diamond pattern in the upper panes. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a tall shouldered wallhead stack that breaks the eaves on the east elevation, along with coped ridge and end stacks topped with clay cans.

Inside, the bar counter is made of glass bricks, consisting of 160 ribbed glass segments topped with timber. The back gantry includes a base and a series of drawers. The walls are lined with full-height timber panelling, some of which may date back to the 19th century. There is a 1950s brick fireplace and an off-sales hatch with sliding windows. The upstairs lounge features a post-war bar counter and has undergone later refurbishments.
