Description

Spittal House is a grand, two-storey farmhouse dating to the mid-19th century, built in Tudor style as part of the Wemyss Estate. It has a U-shaped plan with a small courtyard at the rear. The house is constructed of squared and snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and features hoodmoulds above the main openings. Stone mullions divide the windows into bipartites. Windows on the first floor break through the eaves in gabled dormerheads, each topped with finials.

The west elevation has three bays, with a broad, advanced gabled bay to the right. A door is set within an advanced gabled porch in a re-entrant angle, flanked by a blank plaque. The ground floor has bipartites, and the first floor has two smaller bipartites. The advanced bay has bipartites on both the ground and first floors, with a blank plaque to the gablehead.

The north elevation mirrors the west, again with a broad advanced bay to the right. A canted window with a piended roof is on the ground floor, with a bipartite above. Single-light windows are present on the ground and first floors to the centre and outer left.

The south elevation has two bays, with a bipartite window to the left on the ground floor and a single window to the right. Single windows are located on the first floor. To the rear is a gate with a stone overthrow leading to the courtyard, and a single-storey service outbuilding extends to the east. Sash windows, predominantly with 8 and 12 panes of glazing, are used throughout. The roof is covered with grey slates, featuring saw-tooth skew details with gablet skewputts. The end and ridge stacks are rendered and coped. A separate lodge is located to the north.

Mapwork suggests a construction date later than indicated by McWilliam in 1935. A steading and farm cottages are situated to the west.
