Description
The Old Tyne Bridge in East Linton is a mid to late 16th century structure that has undergone alterations and repairs in 1763 and 1934. This two-arched, ribbed bridge spans the River Tyne, carrying the old post road, and measures 98 feet in length and 31 feet 6 inches above the riverbed. It is constructed from squared and coursed red and yellow sandstone.
The bridge features a central pier with a stepped cutwater made of droved masonry, with the upper cutwater standing 6 feet high. It has two segmental arches that are tied together with rods and straps, and the arches are adorned with yellow chamfered voussoirs. The soffits of the arches have four chamfered ribs, which are flanked by 3-foot wide unribbed strips that include a keystone dated 1763. The impost moulding on the abutments is discontinued where the bridge has been widened at the southeast end. The abutments are splayed onto the banks, and the parapet is made of gablet coped coursed sandstone, featuring a string course and three red sandstone dies.
