Description
Blackdykes is a quadrangular plan steading built between 1826 and 1827. It is constructed from random red and grey-green rubble with dressed cream ashlar details and features a pantile roof.
The south range is asymmetrical, featuring an 8-bay cartshed with two gabled advanced bays at the southern end of the eastern range. This section includes a low segmental archway on the right and two loft openings above. To the right, there are recessed bays with five cart arches and similar openings above. An outer right archway is higher and wider, equipped with a sliding door and a smaller upper opening. There is also a recessed single-storey stable to the right, which has three doorways and two openings, along with an advanced gable at the northern end of the eastern range.
The western range includes a horsemill located at the center, which has a doorway and a broad hayloft opening. The horsemill is octagonal in shape, featuring an inserted doorway on the southwest side and openings along the western range, with rubble filling between the piers. Additionally, there is a lower piend roofed building attached to the northern end of the western range, which may have served as the former engine house.
