Description

These stables date from around 1800. They are a two-storey stable range built of rubble with harled surfaces and dressed with droved ashlar.

The south elevation has a gabled central bay that projects slightly. This bay features a depressed keystoned carriage arch at its centre, above which is an armorial panel dated 1595, incorporated from an earlier house at Eaglescairnie. Square openings are located on either side of the ground floor, and pointed arch windows are set into the upper stage. A circular panel at the apex has flight-holes leading to an attic dovecot, and there is a gablehead stack. The flanking bays have slightly lower eaves, each containing three bays. The bay to the left has a doorway at the centre, with windows to either side at ground and first floor, and a further door to the right. The bay to the right is spaced more widely, featuring a doorway at the centre, a depressed arch to the left, a window to the right, and three louvred hayloft openings above.

The east end elevation has a pointed arch window at ground level, flanked to the left by another window, and an oculus in the upper stage.

The north elevation shows several blocked openings at ground level and louvred hayloft openings above.

The windows are sash and case with small panes of glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates, with piended ends. Ashlar coped skews are present on the gabled centre bays.

Inside, three original stalls have been retained, complete with divisions, railings, and wrought-iron hay-hecks. An electric substation has been inserted into the coach-house. Groom’s accommodation is located at the first floor to the west.

The 1595 panel displays the initials of George Halyburton and A Hunter. Eaglescairnie House, Lodge and Home Farm are listed separately.
